Speedometer Gear

I waited a week for this ‘special order’ part to come in at the dealership. Here is the difference, contrary to what tech guides have told me, you don’t need a new speed sensor when doing an A/T to M/T swap, you need a speedometer gear. With that being said here are photographic evidence to exhibit the length difference in the speedometer gears for both a M/T and A/T. The A/T speedometer gear is noticeably longer than the speedometer gear for the M/T. Also in the picture is proof that the speed sensor I pulled off my A/T is the exact same as the new OEM speed sensor I wasted $50 buying. Oh well.
The part number for the M/T speedometer gear is: MD749150

Three Pedals? Check. 5spd? Check.

I’ve been posting a lot of updates recently about my tranny swap. So here is one more that should not disappoint. I spent the better half of my day fitting the pedals and rerouting wires. I ran my shift linkage and installed my shifter. I just need a new shift knob and shifter boot to make it all look more attractive.

DV/DT Mock Up

Tonight I was just trying my new DV/DT Fabrications FMIC on for size. I also got a brand new OEM clutch master cylinder, new OEM speed sensor and new flywheel cover. One thing that I should put on the record if you are referencing this for your our A/T to M/T swap, you do not need a new speed sensor like the majority of tech guides say. All you need is a new OEM speedometer gear for a M/T car. The speedometer gear in an A/T is much longer than the M/T. I will post pictures of the differences later when I get my new M/T speedometer gear from the dealership soon. There are too many desktop-tuners out there that lack the hands-on experience required to write a halfway decent tech article.

Chromed

Today Denver Bumper Works called and told me that my parts were done. My dad went and picked them up for me and they look beautiful. Some spots the chrome couldn’t be buffed. So far its been hard for me to even get in there with my buffer.

The brake fluid reservoir bracket looks amazing on the car with the brand new brake fluid cap I picked up at the dealership!

Polished Trans Mount

I was bored today so I started cleaning up the bare aluminum on the transmission mount to get it ready for paint. One thing led to another and I started to polish it on the buffer. Used two different polishes. One as a base and get the metal to look good and find any flaws (still has a bunch), but then I used the finer polish and buffed it to a nice shine! It has little casting flaws that I tried to get out by sanding, but it wasn’t worth my time. It’s a tranny mount that is tucked in the engine bay. After I cleaned off all the buffing compound I put in my new black Prothane insert.

Tranny Mount Bushing Out!

I spent a while of trying to figure out the best way to remove the bushing from the upper transmission mount. I figured the best way was to cut out the rubber first. I then hammered a screwdriver in between the sleeve and the mount and created a nice gap. After I had a decent gap to work with I inserted my air hammer and pound away. Eventually, the sleeve bent and came out.

My air hammer has helped me so much with this tranny swap. The funny thing is I accidentally purchased the air hammer. When I look back I’m glad I got the air hammer. No regrets with spending the money to buy my air compressor and all my air tools. They certainly help out a lot! Now, I couldn’t imagine what working on my car would be like without it, but I have not forgotten the days when I had no tools and I had to borrow from my best friends generous dad.

Here is a picture. It may look ugly now, but I’ll try to make it look more attractive, then I will press my black Prothane bushings in to limit/eliminate my engine movement.

Beginning to Look Good

I haven’t been content with the way my engine looks for while. Everyone complements me on how clean it looks, but I have never liked it. I have way too much clutter and it just doesn’t have the look I want. Since my style is changing, I want something that is clean and has a timeless look. I dropped off my Three Speed scatter shield off at Denver Bumper today to get chrome plated. They did an awesome job polishing some 997TT wheels I took there a while ago, so I have confidence in their work. I don’t really want have too much chrome in the engine bay, but just enough to set it off with the other parts I have powder coated.

I also ordered SPC forged aluminum upper control arms from Vivid Racing too. Those will take a while to get, but they should be worth the wait.

New Volk center caps

I might need to get myself a set of these new Volk GTII center caps. I just got my LE center caps about 2 months ago. But these look so good!

It’s coming

Talked to Shep a little while ago and apparently my spare transmission is almost complete. It is getting the Stage 2 build with LSD, and a new intermediate shaft. Sucks that it will cost so much, but I will have zero problems with it. Before I shipped it off to Shep for the build I was thinking about just throwing it in my car because I couldn’t wait much longer. I’m glad I waited.
